It's been a while . . . but big news continues

Yes, the absence of any posts would suggest the absence of anything to post about, but that is hardly our department's reality.  Indeed, it has been a whirlwind since the end of April, between the end of the semester activities (CERCA week, Department Banquet, Final Exams, Graduation), some family needs that took me to Michigan a few times, work-related travel to Scotland, England and Turkey.  

While I was in the United Kingdom, the department received the news that it had been awarded a big grant that will enhance our geospatial programming.  Thanks to Dr. Christina Hupy and numerous faculty in and out of our department, the Geospatial Education Initiative grant will have a big impact on our department and opportunities for our students. Please read the recent press release for the details and anticipate exciting outcomes.

Now, mid-summer is behind us and preparations for the fall semester have already begun.  I will try to catch us up on some of the events and activities in which we have been involved.

So, who was Henry Kolka, anyway?

Some weeks back, the Department of Geography and Anthropology was happy to announce our student scholarship winners (see earlier blog post). After that, a few of us in the department started wondering about the scholarships and who they are named after. It seemed strange to honor current students with awards named after people of whom we knew little. Who was this Henry Kolka and how did we end up with a scholarship named after him? It seemed shameful not to know. Well, one thing led to another, and Bob Barth's daughter found an obituary of Henry Kolka. And that led to other things.  According to the obituary, Henry Kolka was a professor of geography at UW-Eau Claire from 1943 to his retirement in 1975. He passed away in 1991. No faculty currently in the department was here when Mr. Kolka was, so faculty have no stories of Mr. Kolka. But Yvonne, our secretary, does. She started in 1970 and remembers him as somebody who liked to bring her flowers. Let that be a lesson to me. Back

That's what Fluvial Geomorphologists do

At the April 2019 American Association of Geographers' (AAG) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., members of our department received a significant academic honor.  Doug Faulkner, Phil Larson (a 2008 graduate and now associate professor at Minnesota State - Mankato), Harry Jol,  Garry   Running, and colleagues in Indiana and Nebraska received the G. K.
